Environmental Services/Environmental Health:

It is the Council's objective to prevent and reduce pollution by investigation of complaints and incidents and enforcement of Pollution Control legislation. The Council also carry out air quality monitoring and educate and raise awareness regarding good practice.

Officers of the Environmental Health Department undertake the following duties in relation to Environmental Protection:

Investigate complaints from residents about nuisance (including noise and odour) arising from business or domestic activities.
Promote awareness of neighbourhood noise, including dog barking.
Regulate emissions of pollutants to air from businesses (including noise).
Issue ‘authorisations to operate’ in respect of a range of prescribed business activities that have particular potential to cause air pollution.
Deal with the consequences of waste material illegally deposited on unlicensed land.
Provide advice and support to businesses in relation to environmental protection issues,
eg air pollution, noise nuisance and odour control.
Liaise with the Planning Service about the acceptability or otherwise of business development proposals, in terms of potential for adverse environmental health impact (including recommending appropriate ‘planning conditions’ where development permission is to be granted.
Manage the standards of Local Air Quality through the development of Local Air Quality Strategies, in partnership with local communities and businesses.
Provide information and advice on radon gas in dwellings.

Advice and assistance regarding environmental protection issues which are potentially significant in relation to business development/start-up proposal or to local community groups.
Technical and legal advice and guidance in relation to a range of environmental protection issues that may affect you.
