Our Advice about Councils
Your local council should be one of your first ports of call when it comes to reporting noise or anti social behaviour.
Most councils will have a specific department or service that will be able to assist you to deal with problems in your neighbourhood.
Sometimes you might find it hard going, sometimes you will find that the time it will take to involve the council or for them to start proceedings takes longer than you would like. And sometimes you will find that the council does not think there is anything they or you can do.
But, don't give up!
Record, Record, Record!
When dealing with all councils, you will need to follow these essential tips:
ALWAYS get the name and job title (along with contact details) of the person or people you speak with regarding your issue.
LOG everything down; when you speak with them, what they said, if they will get back to you and when they said they will get back to you.
NEVER give away your only copy of a letter, report or log sheet. Always keep a copy this which is vital as things can and do get lost in offices and between departments. Keep the original if possible.
ALWAYS try to remain calm when dealing with a council, no matter how emotional or angry you are feeling.
The people you're communicating with will be more willing to support you with an issue if you remain calm, factual and polite.
Don't lose your rag with them! They are trying to help you even if you don't like the answers they are giving you.
