Classes of Drugs
Class A: Which includes ecstasy, lsd, heroin, cocaine, crack, magic mushrooms, amphetamines (which are prepared to inject).
Supplying or dealing in these drugs carries harsh penalties which can be anything from seven years to life imprisonment and an unlimited fine.
Class B: Drugs which include Amphetamines, cannabis, Methylphenidate (ritalin), pholcodiene.
Supplying or dealing with these carry a possible prison sentence between five and fourteen years and an unlimited fine.
Class C: Tranquilisers, some painkillers, Gamma hydroxybutyrate (GHB), Ketamine.
Supplying or dealing in these carries a possible prison sentence of up to two years and unlimited fine or both.
If you have it illegally, you're offending
It is classed as an offence in the UK to:
Possess a controlled substance unlawfully.
Possess a controlled substance with intent to supply it.
Supply or offer to supply a controlled drug (even if it is given away for free).
Or to allow a house, flat or office to be used by people taking drugs.
Use of illegal drugs has a detrimental affect on communities, it is also responsible for some mental health problems in people.
It can push people into a life of crime and poverty and destroys lives, in the case of young people it can be responsible for a loss of interest in school life and in older people often affects their ability to hold down a full time position in employment.

Some people turn to petty crime to pay for drugs they become addicted to, women have been known to turn to prostitution to pay for drugs.

The police have powers to stop and search anyone they suspect of drug crime they can search a person and a vehicle they believe is being used to carry illegal drugs.
